Lip Blush Aftercare: Your Complete Guide

5 min read

You've just had your lip blush treatment, and you're excited to see your beautiful new lip colour.

But now you're wondering what happens next.

Can you wear lipstick? How often should you apply aftercare balm? Is it normal for your lips to look darker or start peeling?

These are all questions we hear from clients considering lip blush.

At Eloquent Eyes, our brow, lash and beauty clinic in Padbury, Perth, we believe understanding your aftercare is just as important as understanding the treatment itself.

Lip blush is a form of cosmetic tattooing, and your lips need time to heal.

Following the correct aftercare instructions helps support healing, reduces the risk of complications and gives your pigment the best opportunity to settle.

Here's what you need to know.

What Should You Do Immediately After Lip Blush?

Straight after your appointment, your lips may appear brighter, darker or slightly swollen.

They may also feel tender, tight or dry.

This is generally expected following cosmetic lip tattooing.

During the initial healing period, your priorities should be keeping your lips clean, protecting the treated area and following the aftercare instructions provided by your artist.

The First 24 Hours

Always wash your hands before touching your lips.

Clean your lips only as directed by your cosmetic tattoo artist.

Use clean, disposable materials when drying the area.

Avoid unnecessarily touching, rubbing or picking at your lips.

Apply only the aftercare product recommended by your artist.

Avoid alcohol for at least the first 24 hours.

At Eloquent Eyes, Annie will explain how to care for your lips following your appointment.

Remember, everyone's healing experience is slightly different.

What Should You Put on Your Lips After Lip Blush?

One of the most common questions clients ask is whether they should use lip balm, Vaseline or another moisturising product.

The most important thing is to use the product specifically recommended for your treatment.

Your artist may provide a dedicated cosmetic tattoo aftercare balm designed to support the healing process.

Apply it according to the instructions you've been given.

More product isn't necessarily better.

Over-applying heavy creams or ointments can interfere with the normal healing environment.

Avoid experimenting with new skincare products, exfoliants, fragranced lip products or medicated ointments unless advised by an appropriate healthcare professional.

If you're unsure about a product, contact your artist before applying it.

What Not to Do After Lip Blush

There are several things we'd recommend avoiding while your lips are healing.

1. Don't Pick or Peel Your Lips

As your lips heal, you may experience some dryness and flaking.

Resist the temptation to peel away loose skin.

Picking can damage healing tissue, increase infection risk and potentially affect the appearance of your pigment.

Allow your lips to heal naturally.

2. Avoid Lipstick and Lip Makeup

Avoid applying lipstick, gloss or other cosmetic lip products to the treated area until the surface has healed and your artist advises that it's safe.

Using makeup too early can introduce irritation or contamination.

3. Avoid Swimming and Soaking

Avoid swimming pools, spas and prolonged soaking until your lips have healed.

You can still shower and maintain normal personal hygiene, but avoid directing hot water onto the treated area or leaving your lips soaking wet.

4. Be Careful With Exercise and Heat

During the early healing period, avoid activities that cause excessive sweating, friction or irritation around your lips.

Your artist can advise when it's appropriate to return to strenuous exercise, saunas and other heat-related activities.

5. Avoid Kissing While Healing

It's best to avoid kissing and other direct contact with your lips while the treated surface is healing.

This helps reduce unnecessary friction and potential exposure to bacteria.

6. Protect Your Lips From the Sun

Avoid excessive sun exposure while your lips are healing.

Once healed, using suitable SPF lip protection can help protect your lips and reduce pigment fading.

What Happens During Lip Blush Healing?

One of the biggest surprises for clients is how much their lip colour can change throughout healing.

The colour you see immediately after treatment isn't necessarily the colour you'll have once everything has settled.

Days 1–3: Brighter Colour and Swelling

Your lips may appear more vibrant or darker than expected.

Some swelling, tenderness and dryness can occur.

This doesn't mean your lip blush is going to stay that colour.

Days 3–7: Dryness and Flaking

As the surface begins healing, your lips may feel tight or dry.

Light flaking may develop.

Continue following your aftercare instructions and avoid picking at the skin.

Weeks 2–4: Colour Changes

Your lips may look lighter or slightly uneven as healing progresses.

The colour can continue changing during this period, so avoid judging your final result too early.

Weeks 6–8: Assessing Your Results

By this stage, the pigment has generally settled enough for your cosmetic tattoo artist to assess the result.

Some clients may benefit from a touch-up to refine their colour or address uneven pigment retention.

These stages are a general guide. Healing varies between individuals, and you should follow the personalised advice given by your artist.

Why Does My Lip Blush Look Patchy?

If your lip blush looks uneven during healing, don't immediately assume something has gone wrong.

Different areas of your lips can heal and retain pigment differently.

During the initial healing period, the colour may temporarily look lighter in some areas than others.

This is one reason we recommend waiting until your lips have healed before assessing the final appearance.

However, persistent concerns should always be discussed with your artist.

Is Swelling Normal After Lip Blush?

Some swelling, tenderness and redness can occur following cosmetic lip tattooing.

These symptoms should generally improve as your lips begin healing.

However, it's important to recognise the difference between expected healing and a possible complication.

Seek prompt medical advice if you experience:

Increasing pain rather than gradual improvement.

Spreading redness or warmth.

Pus or unusual discharge.

Fever or feeling unwell.

Swelling that becomes worse rather than improving.

Blisters or sores that may indicate a cold sore outbreak.

If you experience severe swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical assistance.

If you have a history of cold sores, let your artist know before treatment, as lip tattooing can trigger an outbreak in susceptible people. Your doctor can advise whether antiviral medication is appropriate.

How Can You Keep Lip Blush Looking Beautiful?

Once your lips have healed, looking after them can help maintain their appearance.

Some simple habits include:

Keeping your lips comfortably moisturised.

Using appropriate SPF lip protection.

Avoiding unnecessary irritation or aggressive exfoliation.

Following your artist's recommended maintenance advice.

Booking a colour refresh when appropriate for your individual result.

Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo, but the visible colour generally softens over time.

How long your results last will depend on your skin, pigment, lifestyle and other individual factors.

Can You See Natural Lip Blush Results?

If you're considering lip blush and wondering how your lips will look after healing, we'd recommend looking at real healed results rather than only freshly tattooed photographs.

At Eloquent Eyes, we've documented lip blush treatments through different stages, including before treatment, corrective treatment, touch-ups and longer-term results.

These images help clients understand how colour changes and why patience during healing is so important.
